Among Polish games that have permanently entered the history of the 8-bit Atari, "Krucjata" holds a special place. Released in 1993 by the company ASF, this platform-adventure "find and use" title offered players a vast world, engaging storyline, and gameplay mechanics inspired by the cult "Dizzy" series. Today, more than 30 years later, it stands as a valuable artifact of the Polish demoscene and computer gaming history.

Storyline and Objective

The player takes on the role of Agent Hardin who—according to the description—is slightly hungover and limping. His mission is simple, yet full of challenges: to find a chest containing an "unspecified prototype and documentation" and, equally important, filled with gold. The chest has been hidden on a distant island, and the adventure begins on the beach. The road to the treasure leads through a variety of locations: from a native village suspended in trees, through underwater dungeons and a sunken pirate ship, to a palace hidden deep in the jungle.

On Hardin’s path stand numerous obstacles, including birds, rolling skulls, and other monsters. However, the main challenge is not combat, but logical thinking. The key to success is figuring out the purpose of items scattered across the screens and using them in the right place to open the way forward.

Gameplay Mechanics

"Krucjata" is a "platformer-room game," meaning the game world is composed of interconnected static screens (rooms). The title is exceptionally extensive, offering as many as 122 screens to explore.

Main gameplay features:

  • Movement: The hero moves by walking and jumping across platforms. Transition to new rooms occurs not only by reaching the edge of the screen but also by entering deeper areas, accessed by pushing the joystick forward.
  • Inventory: Hardin can carry up to three items at once. Using them correctly is essential for solving puzzles and opening passages.
  • Lives and points: The player starts with 6 lives. A life is lost upon contact with an enemy or, interestingly, when Hardin submerges his head underwater without proper diving equipment. Falling from heights is not punished. Besides usable items, the player can collect bottles that add lives and treasures that increase the score.

Authors

"Krucjata" is the work of a Polish team:

  • Programming: Henryk Cygert
  • Graphics: Dariusz Bartoszewski
  • Music: Stanisław Skwiot

The authors created a consistent and immersive production that, despite the hardware limitations of the 8-bit Atari, managed to impress players. Music and graphics match the adventurous exploration theme, while the large world and intriguing puzzles ensure hours of engaging gameplay.

Legacy

"Krucjata" is an example of a high-quality Polish production from the Atari era. Its popularity and cult status among retrogaming fans worldwide prove that even at a time dominated by foreign titles, Polish developers were able to deliver original and polished games. To this day, "Krucjata" is often remembered as one of the most interesting and best-executed "find and use" titles on the Atari XL/XE platform. It continues to be re-released, confirming its lasting value in the retro gaming world.
