Released in 1989 by Byte Back / Red Rat Software, “Speed Run” was intended to be an innovative racing game for Atari 8-bit computers. The idea was ambitious — players would view the race from a cockpit perspective, with an animated driver’s face visible in the upper part of the screen. Unfortunately, the final result left much to be desired.
The gameplay revolved around driving a car in first-person view. The road graphics were extremely basic — almost static, lacking detail or a sense of speed. The most distinctive feature was the animated face of the driver, which ultimately felt more like a gimmick than a strength.
The controls were imprecise, and the driving felt slow and monotonous. Players complained about the lack of excitement, poor animation fluidity, and the repetitive nature of the track. The game seemed to be a budget attempt to mimic Out Run, but without the charm, color, or polish of the original.
Despite the interesting concept, “Speed Run” was poorly received by both players and critics. It was often described as “unfinished,” “boring,” and “lacking any meaningful challenge.” It failed to achieve commercial or critical success and is now mostly remembered as a retro curiosity.
In the history of Atari XL/XE, “Speed Run” stands as an example of a game with potential that was never fully realized.
